Caffeine, ranked as the world’s most popular mood-altering drug, is found in coffee, tea, soda, chocolate and ‘energy drinks.’ Caffeine has the power to counter fatigue and make us feel more alert by blocking sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain and increasing adrenaline production. Moderate caffeine intake (e.g, a cup or two of coffee in the morning) is generally safe and not associated with health risks. However, it is important to consider the side effects of caffeine. Consuming too much caffeine may lead to anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbance – which may interfere with concentration and cause more tiredness. Investing in a good night’s sleep or taking a quick nap may prove more beneficial than caffeine in boosting energy and brain power.
