Dreaming of a relaxing holiday? Prioritize sleep!

Many of us do not get enough sleep to begin with. When the holiday season strikes, we have to balance the shopping, the baking, the holiday parties and get-togethers on top of hectic schedules. We’ve put together a few tips and ideas to help make sleep a priority this year – for both you and your family.  Getting a good night’s sleep over the holidays will improve your mood, energy-level and keep you feeling relaxed.

Know when to put away the toys. Let’s face it – many kids will be getting the latest gadget as a Christmas gift. While it’s fun to stay up late experimenting with new toys, keep an eye on the clock and know when it’s time to put them away. Especially if the gadget emits light – this will make it more difficult for your child to fall asleep.

Indulge, but don’t overindulge. Alcohol, big meals, holiday baking…of course indulgence is a natural part of the season. But for the sake of sleep, it’s a good idea to set your limits. If consumed too close to bed time, excess sugar will make it difficult to fall asleep. Alcohol on the other hand, may help you to fall asleep, but often causes sleep disruption throughout the night.

Quiet time is essential. Even if you only have 15 minutes or a half hour, take time for yourself everyday. Take a short nap, read a magazine, or anything that really makes you relax and feel rejuvenated. Encourage your kids to include quiet time during the day as well.

Get outside. Regular physical activity is linked to better quality sleep at night. While most extra-curricular activities will be closed over the holidays, be sure that you and your family enjoy some fresh air and activity. A brisk walk, skating, street hockey are activities that will help you sleep better (not to mention it will also help curb any overindulgence this season.)

Keep stress to a minimum. Make your list and check it twice to keep yourself organized and stress-free. Whether it’s hosting a large gathering, an unexpected guest, or a fancy meal, being prepared will help you from tossing and turning about it during the night.

From the team at MedSleep, have a wonderful, relaxing, and sleep-filled holiday!
